As of now, I am on the second painting of my project, the killer from Scream. I am about halfway through this painting, currently working on his shirt. I have previously finished Jason from Friday the 13th and will be touching upon tiny details after I am done with the third painting.
I have been using techniques I planned to use, including the mixing of paint on both the palette and the canvas. Among other techniques being used on the paintings to develop the desired effects. I am furthering my knowledge on how to paint using acrylics on canvas because this is one of the first few times I have ever painted on a larger canvas with acrylics. The certain colors being used in parts of each painting are a pain to mix each time there's not enough, the first color was the green of Jason's jacket, currently, it was the browns used in the Scream painting's background. The paintings are bigger than I am used to considering the canvas's dimensions are 18x24”. It took a little to get used to because of the size of the canvas as I went along. Even then, using larger brushes is an easier way to fill in solid base colors, and to build layers faster than trying to use smaller brushes.

Hi, again. Today’s blog is about the plan for my Independent Project. This project is a passion project, where I could pick any theme I wanted to do. The topic and theme I chose are to do three paintings of scenes from classic slasher films. The three films were hard to choose, but in the end, I chose Scream, Friday the Thirteenth, and Nightmare on Elm Street. The title is going to be The Slasher Scene. My process is first by sketching the rough outline of all three scenes at once. When the sketches are done, I will begin painting the background of the scene from Friday the Thirteenth, starting from the edges and moving inwards to the sketch of Jason. Next, I will paint Jason. When finished, I will move onto the scene of the killer reveal in Scream. Once the Scream painting is done, I will be painting a close-up of Freddy Krueger last, due to the extensive amount of detail on both Freddy. I have estimated about 2 weeks per painting, with a week after to touch upon details. The paintings will be on 18x24” canvases.
The main reason why I chose the theme and topic of slasher films is that I am very passionate about the subgenre of horror movies. The process behind creating the films, the mystery, and the scare factor are all reasons I love the genre, even though the films aren’t downright terrifying to me. I want to portray the appeal and the mood in the scenes I chose. I partially chose the three classics mentioned above because they were some of the first slashers I have ever seen, and they have a lasting effect and impact on the subgenre they came from. Back in September I made a post about SMART goals, and what my two goals were. My personal goal I failed was doing the comic, because I had forced myself to work on the pages. My Academy goal to track my progress was successful, and if you look in my Gallery, at the bottom will be a comparison of the first and last piece put into that folder.
Again, I have made two SMART goals for my second semester of this year. The first is to keep my grades in English at an 80% or higher during this semester, as some of the topics are not my strongest suit. Now, instead of drawing this out any further, let me explain the depth of my goal. S - with each new section of the ELA curriculum, I may struggle, but I want to keep the same 86% or higher as my grades for this semester. M - this is measurable with the fact that each time a new assignment comes out, I will get it done and turned in with my best capabilities and keep track of the grades on the assignments next to my overall grade in ELA. A - this is achievable because as long as I do assignments and hand them in on time, and do them the best I can, then my grades in this class should not fall below an 80%. R - this is relevant because I am doing ELA at the moment, and even though I haven’t fully started the next part of the curriculum, I am still planning to not fail/flunk the class. T - this is time bound as I have until mid-June left of school, and I have time restraints on the assignments. This paragraph isn’t going to be any shorter but, my Academy has an independent project, which I will have to manage my time for. The following is the description of the goal. S - the independent project is starting roughly at the beginning of March, and so I am going to need to manage the time I have as strongly as I can in order to finish the project when it is due. M - the goal is measurable through the completion of the project, where I am planning to do three paintings on canvas. The way this project will be measured is through the completion of the paintings. I will make a note and take a photo when the planned projects are half done, and fully completed. A - this is achievable because I will be painting three canvases in the span of roughly 2 months before the end of the year, rather than the intended plan to do five paintings. R - this is pretty relevant since this is a big project in VAM where I will need to complete it within a certain time frame, otherwise I will flunk the project. T - this is a time bound goal that will be finished on the due date of the project, and will have to be completed throughout the rough 2 month time period. To summarize the above paragraphs, I failed one goal, succeeded on another, and made two more in which I will be doing in the weeks and months to come. Thank you for reading, and hopefully I’ll see you next time.
2. Are you copyright or copyleft? Why? I am probably more copyleft, as I feel that the things in the documentary such as the strict hold on music specifically should be lifted and made so it is less strict, so that people CAN meddle with the music to make something they enjoy, so long as they aren’t using the exact song and slapping a new name on it. 3. What is the relationship between media production and media consumption? The way that the relationship is portrayed is that it's strictly beneficial for bigger companies, even though it’s there for entertainment, for people to enjoy. However the companies producing these things such as Disney, are locking whatever they make immediately after it is created, immediately un-allowing ANYONE from doing anything with it, or ideas inspired by it. 4.To what capacity should visual artists be allowed to use the images of other artists? Explain. Artists should be able to use images of other artists for INSPIRATION, or a reference. Tracing is a different thing, where you copy the image exactly and color it differently isn’t a good thing and isn’t good for anyone, and artists can be hurt that people are tracing it and passing it off as their own. For pictures taken by photographers, an artist can use it for reference, but fully copying the image isn’t a good thing, and the artist, if they publish their painting of someone else’s picture should be held accountable. Goals can and can’t be fun. Some people make goals and follow through, while many others don’t. The latter is usually New Year's Resolutions, in which many people, myself included, make goals, though many don’t follow through with said goals.
For me, I don’t normally make goals, though when sitting and thinking about what I want to accomplish during my VAM academy, the goal became pretty clear. I want to track the progress of my art over four months, as I learn new techniques for shading, layering, coloring, etc., from VAM. I planned this goal using the S.M.A.R.T. technique, by making it more specific and measurable. Rather than just saying “my goal is to be better at my art in four months,” I went and broke it down further, first, by making it more specific as to how I would track the progress, which for me is going to be by doing digital art, and putting a series of numbers at the end of the file name, such as ‘9142020’ which stands for the date, 9/14/2020. This art, then is compiled into a folder on my computer called “VAM goal folder”, where the art will reside until I reach the end of my goal, which is January 31st, or the end of the first semester. The art I plan to show by January 31st is fully lined, colored and shaded drawings, made digitally. The amount of digital pieces I would like to create is probably going to be 20, or more, as depending on the size, they don’t take long to make. These pieces are being done in my spare time, and usually finish in an hour or 2. Personally, I am a huge storywriter and I have a problem with abandoning projects in the middle of making them because I become uninspired to do it. Recently, I had a random bout of inspiration and motivation, as well as an idea for a comic/graphic novel, about shape-shifters. This story is a thing I have been working on for at least a month as of now. My goal for myself personally, is to write and draw up to chapter 11 of the story. I am measuring this goal by both finished chapters and pages. The way I am achieving this goal is that every Monday to Wednesday I set aside 1½ hours to write the story, that includes furthering along the plot, writing the chapters, and if needed, adding more to the world’s lore. Then Thursday to Saturday, is reserved for actually drawing the pages of the comic. In the end, so far, the smart goals, that I am actually passionate about, will actually work out in the long run, since it is easier to just say something as a goal and forget about it, but being SMART, helps to keep you focused. |
